The story of the La Costa Resort and Spa and Golf Course

Tucked within the community of La Costa in South Carlsbad, is the La Costa Resort and Spa. This world famous resort lies just east of the beautiful Batiquitos Lagoon. Residents and visitors enjoy picturesque rolling hills, lush canyons and expansive views that stretch all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

La Costa history

The modern La Costa story began in 1965, when a partner in the Desert Inn hotel in Las Vegas bought 3,500 acres of the scenic natural area. He developed a golf course and started selling La Costa real estate. The 90-room Rancho La Costa Inn was built to accommodate the visitors coming to look at these first home sites. Then, the Spa was added and ultimately, another 2,000 acres were purchased as the Inn grew in size. Ever since these humble beginnings, the rich and famous have been coming to what is now the celebrated La Costa Resort and Spa. La Costa was incorporated into the City of Carlsbad in 1972.
Sports Shinko, a Japanese company, bought the La Costa Spa and Resort in 1987 at the peak of the real estate market for a record high price of $250 million. Fourteen years later in 2001, they sold the La Costa Spa to KSL, a California resort hotel group for $120 million. KSL, based in the desert community of La Quinta, owns other resort properties including the del Coronado Hotel and PGA West. KSL has invested $150 million in upgrades and expansions to La Costa and is building 173 one-, two- and three-bedroom villas that would nearly double the number of rooms.

Aviara Golf Course

The Aviara Golf Course is a spectacular championship18-hole golf course designed by Arnold Palmer. Nestled into 180 acres winding through three valleys, it's open to hotel guests and the public. Because of strict environmental concerns, the golf course took a decade to complete, before opening in 1991.
The 7,007-yard, par-72 course was sculpted into the natural topography with water hazards designed as visual extensions of the Batiquitos Lagoon. It meanders through the Aviara neighborhoods, offering spectacular views to fortunate residents.
This fabulous, world-class golf course was built in harmony with nature. During construction much of the native vegetation was left intact, allowing wildflowers to grow to the edge of the fairways and greens. Lakes, cascading waterfalls and streams seem to surround every green. Honored with Golf Magazine's 2004 Gold Medal Resorts Award and #18 on Golf Digest's Top 75 Golf Resorts, the Aviara Golf Course is one of the finest golf facilities in Southern California. The course uses recycled water for 95 percent of its irrigation needs.
