Leucadia is a quiet surfing town, reminiscent of California beach villages of the past. It's located in the north coastal part of Encinitas, just south of Carlsbad. People who live in Leucadia have a strong, independent character and they have a lot of pride in their community.
Leucadia history
Founded by English settlers in 1870, Leucadia was named after one of the Greek isles. Leucadia means "Isle of Paradise" or "Place of Shelter." Many of the street names, such as Hygeia, Jupiter, Vulcan, and Plato were inspired by Greek mythology.

Leucadia lifestyle
Leucadia is a uniquely fun place to hang out and enjoy the relaxed life-style. Very few streets in Leucadia have curbs or sidewalks. In fact, you'll find many of the quaint, tree-lined streets turn into unpaved roads that end suddenly among private Leucadia real estate. That's part of the charm you'll experience when visiting Leucadia!
Small boutiques, casual restaurants, surf shops and service businesses dot the historic Pacific Coast Highway 101. Surfers find Leucadia a prime spot for catching that " perfect wave", while everyone enjoys the breathtaking and dramatic views from the oceanfront bluffs. The favorite beach spots are Swami's Beach, Grandview Beach, Beacon's Beach and Stonesteps Beach.
Neptune Avenue, which parallels the coast, provides access to Leucadia beaches. And it's a popular place for residents and visitors to enjoy fabulous ocean views while walking, running and roller skating. Desirable and expensive Leucadia real estate lines both sides of Neptune Avenue.
At one time most of Leucadia was covered with avocado trees. Today, many active flower and nursery growers continue the agricultural tradition. The many trees, lush landscaping and tracts of vacant land create a relaxed, rural feeling. Residents value their beautiful Leucadia gardens and abundant fruit trees.
Leucadia neighborhoods
The greenhouses and flower fields of Leucadia are slowly being replaced by expensive Leucadia real estate. Here you'll find mostly single-family homes on large lots. Older, smaller cottages are intermixed with newer custom-built Leucadia homes, many with coveted ocean views.
A new trend is to build small detached condominium projects on the remaining parcels of vacant land near the Leucadia bluffs, just west of Highway 101. These new Leucadia homes are all selling at close to $1 million, and up. A few small apartment and condominium projects complete the eclectic Leucadia housing mix.
A key reason why Leucadia is so unique, it that it hasn't changed much in 30 years. Currently, there is discussion at the City of Encinitas about creating an improvement district that would modernize parts of Leucadia. It's a very controversial subject with Leucadians, who love their community just the way it is - thank you!
Leucadia schools
Like the other areas of Encinitas, Leucadia schools are excellent. Classes for the younger children are in the highly-rated Encinitas Union School District, while high school students are served by the prestigious San Dieguito Union High School District. Paul Ecke Central Elementary School, the small K-6 local school built in 1942, is the pride of Leucadia. Many parents of today's student's attended the same school a generation ago!
